The Importance of Organic Grain

The value of organic foods and grain is often thought of as being free of chemicals: chemical fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides. However, the significance of organic is much greater. For organic plants and pasture to produce well, the ground must be built up with organic matter and organic minerals. The plants grown on this type of soil are much more healthy and provide a greater nutritional value.

In addition to the health benefits of organic feed, certified organic grain is the about the only way to guarantee feed that is free from genetically modified (GM) grain. We had not paid much attention to the GM issue until we read an article in the Feb. 7, 2001 edition of the Poolesville Gazette that stated that 60% of the corn grown in Maryland is GM. Since only 80% of a farm's corn crop can be GM corn, approximately 80% of Maryland farms are growing GM corn! Basically any food or feed that has corn in it will have a significant amount of GM grain!

Many of the GM plants are genetically designed to produce their own insecticide in their cells. When worms feed on the plants they are killed with the same affect as insecticide! No one knows the long term affect of GM "insecticide" on humans! The USDA has volunteered all U.S. citizens to be "guinea pigs" to test the long term effects.

Recently when I stopped at our local CVS in the small town of Poolesville, Md. I noticed that there were five people working behind the pharmacy counter! Today almost every large grocery store has a pharmacy. (Is their food that unhealthy?). There are pharmacies conveniently located at other places as well. What is wrong? Why do so many need drugs to keep them going?

In Psalms 22:12 we came across a phrase that at first seemed meaningless, but which holds a key to our questions. The phrase is: "Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round." When we researched "Bashan" we discovered that it means "soft fertile land". Bashan was an extraordinarily rich plain and was well known for its excellent pasture. Bashan was also known for its strong healthy animals. It was the fertile soil and rich pasture that produced the strong, healthy animals.

Today, most farm soil is "built up" with three basic commercially manufactured chemical ingredients called fertilizer. It makes the soil productive, but the soil is not soft, has little organic matter, and few earthworms. Chemical fertilizer does to plants what a diet of candy bars, french fries, and soda will do for you. It will make you grow and put on weight, but it does not make you strong and healthy.

Therefore, if we want to be strong and healthy, we need to eat food that is produced on rich fertile soil. That is the primary importance of eating organically raised food, not just the absence of chemicals. We are committed to using certified organic feed for our poultry because of the soil it is grown on. We want to provide you with the best food that we can to help you in reaching your goal of not needing drugs to make your body operate the way you would like it to.
